Feb. 2, 1998
California's Esther Knox will join college tennis' top players this week when she heads to Dallas, Texas to compete in the 1998 Rolex National Intercollegiate Indoor Tennis Championships. The tournament will be hosted by Southern Methodist University at the Brookhaven Country Club and Moody Coliseum, Feb. 5-8.
The Rolex National Intercollegiate feature a 32-player singles field and a 16-team doubles field for both men and women, including qualifiers from the Rolex Regional Championships held across the country during the fall, winners from the first two legs of the 1997-98 ITA Collegiate Grand Slam-the ITA National Clay Court Championships and the All-American Championships-and at-large wild card selections made by the ITA National Tournament Committee. Knox, who is currently the nation's 22nd-ranked singles player, received one of the Committee's at-large berths.
To this point in the season, Knox has posted a 10-4 singles record. Knox got the fall tournament season started with a bang when she won the first tournament of the year, the ASU/Miss Karen's Tennis Classic, in Tempe, Ariz., in October. She then reached the round of 16 at the Riveria All-American and the fourth round of the Rolex Regionals.
Last season as a true freshman, Knox earned All-American Honor after advancing to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Singles Championship. In only her first season of collegiate tennis, she played most of Cal's dual matches in the No. 2 position and posted a 16-8 overall singles record.
The seventh-ranked California women's tennis team will return to action Friday, Feb. 13 when the Bears host No. 21 San Diego State in a dual match at the Hellman Tennis Center on the Cal campus. Match time is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
