Saturday, Feb. 14 Pepperdine Hellman Tennis Center 12 noon
THE LINEUPS: Seven of Cal's players are available to play this week with all expecting to see action. The tentative singles lineup includes; Amanda Augustus, Esther Knox, Stephanie Tibbits, Francesca La'O, Amy Jensen and Anita Kurimay. Expect to see teams of Augustus/Amy Jensen, La'O/Lee and Knox/Kurimay in doubles play. Unavailable due to injury are Claire Curran (elbow), Emeka Mayes (ankle - season), and Lisa Swierniak (shoulder - season).
THE COACHES: One of the Top 10 winningest coaches in women's collegiate tennis, Jan Brogan is in her 20th year as the Bears head coach. In that time, she has compiled a career dual match record of 363-147 (.712). She is assisted by associate head coach Kathy Toon.
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: San Diego State enters Friday's contest with a 2-1 dual match record on the season and were ranked No. 21 in the most recent ITA poll. The Aztecs are led by the trio of Maggie Cole, Dorota Wozniak and Jeanette Bhaguandas, all of whom have been ranked by the ITA during the SDSU careers. Cal leads the all-time series with SDSU by a 21-7 margin and last season defeated the Aztecs in San Diego, 6-3. Pepperdine, currently the nation's No. 10 ranked squad, enters Saturday's match with a 4-1 season mark. The Waves have three players ranked among the ITA's Top 60 including, No. 20 Zsofia Csapo, No. 21 Karoline Borgersen and No. 53 Anh Nguyen. In 1997, Cal traveled to Pepperdine and won a tightly contested 5-4 decision over the Waves. The Bears lead the all-time series with Pepperdine, 19-4.
ROLEX RECAP: California's Esther Knox was one of only 32 individuals invited to contend for the 1998 Rolex National Intercollegiate Indoor Singles Championship last week in Dallas, Texas. Currently the nation's 22nd-ranked singles player, Knox, who had been battling a case of the flu, didn't have enough stay with ninth-ranked Vanessa Webb of Duke and fell in the opening round 6-2, 6-2 on Thursday. However, Knox did bounce back in the consolation bracket and posted her first win of the tournament by defeating the nation's No. 21 player, Karoline Borgersen of Pepperdine, in a three-set thriller 6-2, 5-7, 6-2. But the sophomore from Sydney, Australia was unable to go any further and took eighth-ranked Dawn Buth of Florida to the limit before eventually being eliminated in three sets 6-4, 5-7, 6-2.
Opening Round
Vannessa Webb (Duke) def. Esther Knox (Cal) 6-2, 6-2
Consolation Bracket
1st Round: Esther Knox def. Karoline Borgersen (Pep.) 6-2, 5-7, 6-2
2nd Round: Dawn Buth (Fla.) def. Esther Knox (Cal) 6-4, 5-7, 6-2
NORTHWEST NO SWEAT: In its most recent dual match action, Cal traveled to the Northwest for a trio or road contests versus Washington, Washington State and Oregon, Jan. 29-Feb. 1. The Bears showed why the pollsters have them ranked No. 7 in the nation and easily swept all three matches to improve their dual match record to 5-0. The Bears opened the trip at Washington and rolled past the Huskies, 7-2. Amanda Augustus, fresh from her Pac-10 Indoor flight 1 singles title, led the way for Cal against Washington with victories at both No. 1 singles and doubles. The following day, Augustus posted her eighth straight singles victory as Cal rolled past Washington State, 7-2. Cal took all but the No. 4 singles position and 2-of-3 doubles matches. The Bears wrapped up the road trip with a 5-1 win at Oregon. Although Augustus' consecutive singles victory string was snapped by Alina Wygonowska, 6-3, 7-6, the Bears swept the remaining singles matches as Tibbits, La'O, Kurimay, Jensen and Lee all recorded victories. The doubles portion of the dual match was not contested.
TIBBITS ON TEAR: With a 17-7 mark to this point in the season, California's Stephanie Tibbits is clearly off to the best start of he career. Twice during the 1997-98 season, the junior from Ketchner, Canada has ripped off multiple match winning streaks. The first came during the fall/winter tournament season when Tibbits won eight straight and reached the final of the consolation bracket at the Rolex Regionals (the final was canceled due to poor weather) and the fourth round of the Milwaukee Invitational. Tibbits, who cracked the fall ITA charts at No. 104 and most certainly rise from that position when the Spring I rankings are released on Feb. 16, is currently in the midst of her second run and has posted victories in all five of Cal's dual matches to date playing in both the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Tibbits registered a 21-14 mark last season and had most of her success in the Bears No. 4 slot (8-1 dual match).
