Cal takes care of Ducks, 6-1

BERKELEY, Calif. -- The University of California men's tennis team kept its undefeated season alive with a 6-1 victory over the visiting Oregon Ducks in a Pac-10 dual match at the Hellman Tennis Center on the Cal campus Saturday. The victory raised Cal's dual match record to 4-0, while the loss, which was Oregon's first of the season, dropped the Ducks to 3-1.

Due to injuries to several key players, Cal head coach Peter Wright was force to us a make-shift lineup versus the Ducks but it didn't appear to matter as the Bears took all but one of the singles matches and two of the three doubles slots.

Senior Minh Le, playing in the No. 2 slot for the second consecutive match, got things started for the Bears with a hard-fought three set victory over Oregon's Guillermo Carter 6-2, 3-6, 6-2. Cal went on to swept the Nos. 3-6 positions as seniors Kian Raiszadeh and Dave Sutton as well as freshmen Erik Dmytruk and Scott all posted victories for the Bears.

The bright spot of the match for Oregon was Erwan Kergroach. The junior from Paris, France, was able to outlast Cal's Bobby Mahal at No. 1 singles 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, to earn the Ducks their only point on of the day. It was also the first point Cal had surrendered in dual match action this year. Kergroach then teamed with Guillermo Carter to get a win over Cal's Dmytruk and Le at No. 1 doubles, 8-6.

The Cal men's tennis team will return to action next weekend when the Bears travel to San Diego for the University of San Diego Tournament. The tournament, which will feature some of the West's top teams, will be played Feburary 6-8.
