BERKELEY – Senior Portia Sherman became the sixth player in program history to register 75 career wins and the No. 9 California beach volleyball team notched 4-1 victories over UC Davis and San Jose State on the first day of the Cal Classic at the Clark Kerr Sand Courts on Friday.

Sherman and partner Emma Donley recorded straight-set victories in the No. 1 spot, giving Sherman a career record of 75-14. She and Donley also amassed their 47^th career victory – extending their program record for the most and all coming as the team's top pair.

Three other Bears also continue to climb the ranks of Cal's record books. Senior Gia Fisher teamed with partner Ava Haughy at the No. 3 spot Friday to earn two victories and now has 71 for her career, which is tied for seventh place on the program's all-time individual wins list. Donley is one win behind Fisher with 70 in her career, which places her ninth in Cal history while senior Marilu Pally also registered two more victories with partner Grace Hong on Friday and now has 66 career wins, tied for 10^th all-time at Cal.

Cal's only loss to UC Davis came at the No. 5 spot when sophomore Elle Evers had to retire due to injury. The Spartans notched their lone win on the No. 4 court.

The Bears close out their home schedule Saturday on the final day of the Cal Classic, also against UC Davis and San Jose St. The program will hold a special ceremony following the final match of the day to honor its eight departing seniors. The festivities are estimated to begin at approximately 4 p.m.

Saturday will also mark the final home matches ever at the Clark Kerr Sand Courts for the Bears. Cal is moving into a new facility – the Banatao Family Beach Volleyball Stadium – in 2027.
