Cal Off To Commanding Start At Crew Classic
Bears’ Fourth Varsity Eight Sweeps Both Preliminary Races
SAN DIEGO – California men's rowing saw its fourth varsity eight sweep both of its preliminary races on the Golden Bears' first day of competition at the San Diego Crew Classic on Saturday morning. The young crew posted the fastest time of the day among its collegiate men's competition to secure its lane position in Sunday's finals.
Â
The Bears took on UCLA and UC Davis in the first of four heats in the Cal Cup preliminaries. Cal took the early lead, with UCLA trailing, and maintained the advantage down the stretch of the course with ease. The Bears cruised past the finish line in 6:20.089, which was the fastest time among all heats of the men's Cal Cup preliminaries.
Â
In the open challenge, Cal got off to another commanding start, immediately pulling a boat length ahead as the race got underway. The Bears chipped their way down the course, eventually pushing to a three-boat lead in open waters out in front of the rest of the field at the 1,000-meter mark. Cal finished in 6:34.469, which was nearly 21 seconds faster than the second-place finisher.
Â
The Cal Cup grand final is slated for tomorrow at 9:51 a.m. PT, while the men's open 8+ final will take place at 11:35 a.m.
