Pair Of Cal Long Jumpers Clinch All-ACC Honors
Luke Buddie Posts Bears’ No. 8 All-Time Heptathlon Score
BOSTON – The California track & field team closed out its second day at the ACC Indoor Championships on Friday with two more All-ACC honors (bringing its total up to five) and a pair of program all-time top-10 entries as well as an additional finals qualifier.
No. 8 Virginia's men maintained their firm grip on the men's team leaderboard with 48 points, followed by Louisville's 31 and North Carolina's 28.5; the Golden Bears, meanwhile, currently sit in eighth with 16 points. For the women, Notre Dame likewise held onto its advantage with 29 points, just ahead of Virginia (27) and Miami (26), while Cal's three points have the squad in 15th place.
For the second year in a row, two of the Bears' long jumpers earned indoor All-ACC honors. Sophomore
Trevor Rogers recorded a season-best 7.37m (24-2.25) on his final attempt of the competition, good for fourth place and his third all-conference award. Senior
Jason Plumb finished two spots below Rogers with a best mark of 7.34m (24-1), which he posted on his first jump for his second All-ACC nod. Juniors
Chukwunonso Udeh and
Javon Hampton Jr. also joined Rogers and Plumb in the competition, finishing with marks of 7.12m (23-4.5) and 7.09m (23-3.25), respectively.
Redshirt junior
Luke Buddie was Cal's lone finisher in the heptathlon, as classmate
Seth Johnson did not start the final event after finishing third in the 60m hurdles (8.05) and matching his season best in the pole vault (4.40m/14-5.25). Buddie saved his best for last, posting a two-second personal best in the 1000m race to finish fourth in the field and rise to No. 9 in program history. His final eighth-place total of 5329 points, which also added a point to Cal's team total, pushed him up the Bears' all-time list to No. 8 overall with a 185-point PR.
Junior
Mari Testa added another standout time to her impressive season with a heat-winning 8.25 in the women's 60m hurdles prelims to earn an auto-bid to Saturday's final and the No. 3 time overall. Sophomore
Inara Ukawuba and senior
Saqqara Ruffin raced in the same hurdles heat, posting times of 8.54 (Ukawuba) and 8.61 (Ruffin).
Two Cal freshmen (
Caitlyn Johnson and
