The No. 10 California beach volleyball team makes its 2026 home debut this week when it hosts the Battle of the Bay at the Clark Kerr Sand Courts. The Golden Bears (1-4), coming off a competitive weekend at the Outrigger DUKE Kahahamoku Beach Classic in Honolulu, will host Sac State and UC Davis on Friday with USF and Pacific coming to town on Saturday.

PLAYING WITH THE BEST: The Bears went 1-4 last weekend in Honolulu, but all four losses were to top 10 opponents and by a score of 3-2. Cal also defeated No. 16 Hawai'I 3-0. Cal only dropped one spot in this week's AVCA rankings – the Bears were ranked No. 9 in the preseason poll.

DONLEY, SHERMAN NAMED NATIONAL PAIR OF THE WEEK: Junior Emma Donley and senior Portia Sherman were named the AVCA/CBVB National Pair of the Week on Tuesday after going 4-0 – all against top-10 opponents. The Bears' No. 1 pair, who last season became the first AVCA First-Team All-Americans in program history, defeated duos from No. 2 Stanford, No. 4 USC, No. 6 Texas and No. 7 Loyola Marymount. Donley and Sherman dropped just one set over the four matches.

SUCCESSFUL DEBUT: Junior Ava Haughy, a transfer from Arizona State, made a significant impact in her first action with the Bears last weekend. Playing on the No. 3 court, she teamed up with 2025 All-MPSF selection Gia Fisher to go 4-1 in Honolulu – defeating pairs from No. 2 Stanford, No. 4 USC, No. 7 Loyola Marymount and No. 16 Hawai'i. Haughy and Fisher also lost a tight, three-set match against No. 6 Texas.

NEW HOME: The Bears will move into a new facility in 2027 – the Banatao Family Beach Volleyball Stadium. The project is being partially funded by Cal's successful Gender Equity Campaign that raised $8 million and allows for the campus' continued commitment to and compliance with Title IX – the landmark federal law that was enacted in 1972 that prohibits sex discrimination in any educational program or activity receiving any type of financial aid.

HEAD COACH MEAGAN OWUSU: Head Coach Meagan Owusu is in her 10th season at the helm at Cal and has established the Bears as a consistent national power. Cal has qualified for each of the past four NCAA Championships and has ended the season ranked in the top 12 for eight straight years – including four straight top-10 finishes. Owusu was also a defensive specialist for Cal's indoor program from 2007-2010 and helped the Bears reach their only two NCAA Final Fours in history.
