BERKELEY, Calif.– The California women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season Sunday afternoon falling at home to Pepperdine 1-0. The Waves scored a goal in the final five minutes to win the rematch from last year's NCAA Championship first-round thriller.
While the original was good, the sequel was just as entertaining with both teams battling it out in a physical, defensive showcase. Both teams had solid chances but both goalkeepers put on clinics with Cal senior
Teagan Wy picking up a season-high five saves and Pepperdine's Jillian Medvecky earning six. Wy matched her previous season high of four in the first half alone.
In the 85th minute the Waves (1-2-1) drew a foul just outside the box to set up a free kick. Tabitha LaParl led the set piece with a cross into the box and Lilly Stewart headed in the late game winner.
The Golden Bears (2-1-1) saw their most potent shot selection of the season winning the shot battle 11-8and putting six of those shots on goal.
After missing all of last season with a torn ACL,
Lizzie Vranesh stepped on the pitch for the first time in 660 days. The junior was given a standing ovation by her teammates and many of the fans in attendance.
Cal will now look to regroup on the road at Utah Valley on Thursday. Kick off is set for 6:30 p.m. in Orem, Utah.
