FULLERTON, Calif.– The California women's soccer team ended its season-opening road trip with a scoreless draw against Cal State Fullerton Sunday afternoon.
The Golden Bears (1-0-1) both picked up and suffered their first shutout of the season. The Titans (0-0-1) who were playing in their first match of the year, bent but refused to break and survived an onslaught of Cal attacks that featured nine corner kicks.
The Bears won the shot battle 20-3 with 13 coming in the first half. Cal put five of those shots on frame, led by senior
Alex Klos with two, but Titans goalkeeper Isaac Ranson made tremendous saves all afternoon to preserve the clean sheet. The Bears made several runs at the goal and saw a number of promising chances but couldn't find the finishing touch.
Cal's senior goalkeeper
Teagan Wy earned one save of her own to keep Cal State Fullerton out of the net.
Five different freshmen earned some minutes for the Bears including
Cara Borthwick and
Olivia McPherson who both made their collegiate debuts.
Elhom Khursand led that group making her second consecutive start and playing 76 minutes.
The Bears head home undefeated and look ahead to their home opener this Thursday at 4:30 p.m. when the San Francisco Dons cross the Bay Bridge and come to Edwards Stadium. The match will be aired on ACCNX.
