Weinstein Wins National Championship In 200 Freestyle
Incoming Freshman Beats Katie Ledecky For USA Swimming Crown
INDIANAPOLIS – Claire Weinstein is putting together quite a resume before ever setting foot on Cal's campus.
The incoming freshman won the USA Swimming national championship in the 200-meter freestyle on Wednesday night at the IU Natatorium, punching her ticket to the 2025 World Championships this summer in Singapore in her second event. The 2024 Olympic silver medalist previously qualified for Worlds in the 800-meter freestyle with a runner-up finish on Tuesday.
"My training this year has been really good," Weinstein told Peacock TV. "I think this year I've just been more consistent than I have in previous years. I'm excited that's showing in my races."
Weinstein, the No. 3-ranked recruit in the country by SwimSwam, helped Team USA win the silver medal in the 800 freestyle relay at the Paris Olympics last summer. She also advanced to the finals of the 200 free as an individual.
Her winning time Wednesday of 1:54.92 beat out 14-time Olympic medalist Katie Ledecky and world record-holder Torri Huske. She finished second to Ledecky in the 800 free on Tuesday.
"I've just been getting racing reps in," Weinstein told Peacock. "I used to be scared of this race because I'd kind of go in and not know what to do. Now, I've raced it so many times that I know exactly what I need to do and it's just muscle memory."
