Bears Drop Wild One To Boston College

Eagles Score 3 In Top Of Ninth, Even Series

BERKELEY – Boston College scored three unearned runs after two were out in the top of the ninth inning for a wild 10-9 comeback victory over the California baseball team on Friday night at Stu Gordon Stadium as the teams scored a combined 10 runs in the final two innings. Pinch-hitter Estaban Garcia's two-RBI double just out of the reach of Cal left fielder Carl Schmidt in the top of the ninth snapped an 8-8 tie and provided the eventual winning margin.

The Eagles had trailed 8-7 heading into the top of the ninth and were down to their final out after Kaden Taque struck out the first two batters in the inning. Josiah Ragsdale singled through the left side to get Patrick Roche to the plate but Taque got him to hit a slow bouncer up the middle that Cal shortstop PJ Moutzouridis was unable to come up with for the first of two consecutive Cal errors in the inning. With runners on first and second, Taque then got Jack Toomey to ground the ball to the right side. Cal first baseman Dominic Smaldino ranged to his right and fielded cleanly but Taque was late coming off the mound and then dropped a throw from Smaldino that was just above Taque's head on a bang-bang play at first base. Ragsdale came around to score the tying run on the play when the ball bounced away from Taque, setting up Garcia's heroics.

Cal still had a chance for a second walk-off win in as many nights in the bottom of the ninth. The Bears loaded the bases with no outs in the when Dominic Smaldino drew a leadoff walk, Jacob French was hit by a pitch and Moutzouridis singled. Dylan Howanitz then came on in relief of winning pitcher John Kwiatkowski and got pinch-hitter Jeff Hoffman to hit into a 5-4-3 double play. The Bears scored a run on the play to cut their deficit to 10-9 and moved the tying run in French to third base but Howanitz ended the threat by retiring Cade Campbell on a fly ball to left fielder Colin Larson to pick up his first save for the Eagles.

Ragsdale (3-5, 3 R, HR, RBI) and Toomey (2-5, R, BB) were the only players with multiple hits for an Eagles squad that was limited to eight but also drew eight walks and five hit by pitches while taking advantage of a season-high five Cal errors that led to seven unearned runs. Pinch-hitter Gunnar Johnson homered in his lone at bat with a solo shot that tied the game at 5-5 in the eighth.

Jacob French (3-3, 2 R, RBI, HBP, SF) and Jarren Advincula (3-5, R, RBI) combined for half of Cal's 12 hits as the duo continued their battle for the team's batting average title, with French raising his post-game average to .369 and Advincula to .352. Moutzouridis (2-4, 2 R, 2B, BB) also chipped in with a two-hit game and Campbell drove in a pair. Alex Birge hit his 10th homer of the season with a solo blast in the fourth.

Kwiatkowski (1.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 HBP) improved to 1-0 with the victory, while Taque (1.1 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 0 ER, 4 SO, 1 HBP) fell to 0-1 with the loss. Both teams used five pitchers. Boston College starter Brady Miller (6.0 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 4 SO) had the longest outing for either team while reliver David Shaw (3.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 SO) turned in the longest stint for the Bears.

The loss ended any chance Cal (21-30, 8-21 ACC) had of catching Boston College (26-27, 10-19 ACC) in the final ACC standings and guaranteed the Bears will be the No. 16 seed at the ACC Baseball Championship to played May 20-25 at Durham Bulls Athletic Park in Durham N.C. Cal will play the No. 9 seed in an opening round game on Tuesday, May 20 (9 am PT). Miami (30-22, 14-13 ACC) is currently in ninth place. Official pairings and seedings will be determined and announced following the conclusion of the ACC's regular season on Saturday when Cal and Boston College will play the rubber match of their current three-game series on Senior Day at Stu Gordon Stadium. Cal will honor 13 seniors in a pre-game ceremony scheduled to begin at 12:40 pm with first pitch slated for 1:15. A live stream of Sunday's series finale will be available on ACCNX/ESPN+ with George Devine and Jim Darby on the call.
