No. 6 Bears Finish Third In Regional Final
2025 Season Comes To A Close
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The 2025 season came to a close for the No. 6 California women's gymnastics team on Sunday as the Golden Bears finished third in the Tuscaloosa Regional Final.
Cal closed out the year with a team score of 197.575, while No. 3 Florida (197.700) and host Alabama (197.675) placed first and second, respectively, to advance to the NCAA Championship.
Senior
Maddie Williams finished second in the all-around with a score of 39.600, trailing only top-ranked all-arounder and Olympic champion Jade Carey (39.700) from Oregon State. Williams took home a share of both the vault (9.90) and the uneven bars (9.95) titles giving her four wins on the weekend and seven podium finishes. She nearly earned the first perfect score of her career receiving two 10s on bars routine.
Senior
Mya Lauzon picked up a share of two event titles as well winning the balance beam (9.95) for the second time this weekend and splitting the gold on the floor exercise (9.95).
The Bears had a very consistent showing across all four events, counting nothing lower than a 9.800 the entire night. They started out with a 49.375 on floor, followed by their third-highest vault rotation of the year at 49.300 and capped off the meet with back-to-back 49.450s on both bars and beam.
Cal was in second place after two rotations but trailed the Crimson Tide as they headed to beam. A fall in the leadoff spot put the pressure on the remaining five Bears to all hit and all five rose to the occasion. Williams got the team back on track with a 9.875 and senior
Abbey Scanlon put a bow on her incredible story with a 9.875 in the final routine of her career. Lauzon was next with her 15
th 9.95+ routine of the year, her fourth on beam, and in truly clutch fashion freshman
Ondine Achampong closed out her rookie season with a career-high 9.925.
The Bears did all they could but fell just short as Alabama, fueled by its home crowd, posted the highest beam and floor scores of the meet to close out the night.
The 2025 season was one to remember for the California women's gymnastics team. In its inaugural ACC season, Cal posted a 32-5 overall record with a perfect 6-0 conference mark to win the regular season conference title. Lauzon took home ACC Gymnast of the Year honors and co-head coaches Elisabeth Crandall-Howell and Justin Howell were named Co-Coaches of the Year. The Bears won nine of 11 ACC Gymnast of the Week Awards, six of which were claimed by Lauzon, and all four of their all-arounders won the award at least once. They tallied 13 All-ACC honors, six WCGA All-America honors, four ACC individual event titles, and had two NCAA Regional event champions.
Cal will now wait to see which individuals will be selected to the NCAA Championships on April 17 in Fort Worth, Texas.
