BERKELEY – Saint Mary's (20-19) defeated the California baseball team by a final score of 10-4 in the finale of a five-game Golden Bears home stand in a nonconference contest Monday evening at Stu Gordon Stadium.
Kalen Applefield (1-3, 2B, SF, RBI) and
Elijah Clayton (1-3) both had their first hits at Cal back-to-back in the seventh inning, while
Jacob French hit his third home run of the campaign with a solo shot in the second inning. In addition,
Cade Campbell (1-4, 2B, 2 RBI, SF) drove in a pair of runs and
Jarren Advincula (1-3, R, 2B, 2 BB) extended his hit streak to 10 games with a third-inning double that was his team-leading 15th of the season and has now hit safely in 25 of his last 26 contests.
Aiden Taurek (2-4, 2 R, 2B, HR, 2 RBI, BB) and Ryan Pierce (2-5, R, 2B) each had two of the Gaels' 10 hits and were the only players from either team with more than one. Brady Petit (1-3, 2 RBI, BB) and Eddie Madrigal (1-5, 2 RBI, SB) each drove in two for the winners.
Saint Mary's used seven pitchers in the contest with six relievers throwing a single inning each and limiting the Bears to one run and three hits over their final six trips to the plate after Cal had scored three times in the first three innings off Saint Mary's starter Sean Cannon. All seven Gaels' pitchers recorded at least one of the group's 10 strikeouts. Dylan Delvecchio (1.0 IP, 1 BB, 1 SO) pitched the fifth inning as the third Saint Mary's pitcher and earned the win to improve to 3-2 on the season.
Taurek got the scoring started with a two-out solo homer in the top of the first before French answered with his solo shot in the bottom of the second to tie the score before Applefield's sacrifice fly plated
PJ Moutzouridis later in the frame to make it 2-1 in favor of the Bears.
Cal went ahead 3-1 in the bottom of the third when Advincula led off with a double and scored two batters later on Campbell's RBI double.
Cal remained in front 3-1 until Saint Mary's put up five runs in the top of the sixth off losing pitcher
Gavin Eddy (4.1 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 2 SO, 1 WP) and
Cole Tremain (0.2 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB). The Gaels loaded the bases with one out off of Eddy on two singles and a fielder's choice with no out on the play to end his outing. Tremain got Ian Armstrong for the second out on a sacrifice fly that also got Saint Mary's within a run before allowing back-to-back two-RBI singles to Madrigal and Petit that gave the Gaels a 6-3 advantage.
Cal got one run back in the bottom of the seventh when Applefield led with a double and later scored on Campbell's sacrifice fly but Saint Mary's tacked on four unearned runs in the top of the eighth. Jared Mettam drew a walk from Cal reliever
Jordy Lopez to start the inning before the Bears botched a bunt play trying to get the lead runner at second to put Gaels on first and third with no outs. Tanner Griffith was the next Saint Mary's batter and bunted again. Griffith was thrown out at first base on the play but Mettam raced home from third when the threw went to first and beat Advincula's return throw to the plate for the first Gaels' run of the inning. Cody Kashimoto followed with an RBI single to end Lopez' outing before Taurek and Pierce capped the rally with an RBI double and RBI single off
JJ Hollis.
