No. 5 Bears Fall To No. 2 Stanford In Big Splash
Cardinal Pulls Away In Second Half For Victory
BERKELEY – The No. 5 California women's water polo team overcame an early deficit to stake a halftime lead but ultimately fell to No. 2 Stanford 12-8 in the annual Big Splash on Friday evening to wrap up the regular season.
Rozanne Voorvelt and
Abbi Magee each had a pair of goals for the Golden Bears (17-4, 3-3 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation), who earned the No. 4 seed in next week's MPSF Tournament and will face off against fifth-seeded San Jose State in the first round.
Cal goalie
Talia Fonseca registered 10 saves, including turning away two penalty shots. She also blocked two point-blank shots in succession during one possession in the second quarter.
After the Cardinal jumped out to leads of 3-0 and 4-1, the Bears strung together four goals in a row to take a 5-4 advantage into the break. Voorvelt scored both of her goals during the run.
Stanford scored the first two goals of the third quarter to surge back in front, but Magee's penalty shot with 4:19 showing on the clock knotted the game again. The Cardinal pulled away from there, scoring the next six goals and holding Cal scoreless until 40 seconds remained in the game.
The Bears and Spartans will face off next Friday at 2:30 p.m. PT. The MPSF Tournament is being hosted by UCLA.
