BERKELEY– NC State (25-12, 10-6 ACC) opened a three-game ACC series against the California baseball team (18-19, 6-13 ACC) with a 9-0 victory over the Golden Bears at Stu Gordon Stadium on Thursday evening. Cal All-American candidate
Jarren Advincula (2-5) did record his 22nd multiple-hit game of the season while extending his hitting streak to seven games and hitting safely for the 22nd time in the last 23 contests.
The Wolf Pack jumped on top 5-0 after two and a half innings with two in the top of the second and three in the third.
Justin DeCriscio and Alex Soso hit back-to-back homers off Cal starter and losing pitcher
David Shaw (0-4) to start the second.
In the third, Shaw walked leadoff hitter Ty Head and then gave up a two-run homer to Chris MuHugh to make it 4-0. The Wolf Pack picked up a third run in the inning when Josh Hogue was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a ground ball and scored on a two-out single by Brayden Fraasman.
Cal threatened in its half of both the first and second frames but left five runners on including four in scoring position. The Bears would leave on a total of 10 and suffer just their second shutout of the season.
The score remained 5-0 until the ninth inning as Shaw pitched a scoreless fourth and Cal reliever
Logan Piper matched zeros with Wolf Pack starter Dominic Fritton (6.0 IP, 6 H, 2 BB, 6 SO) and reliever Andrew Shaffner (3.0 IP, 1 H, 2 SO) until the ninth inning when NC State added four runs. Head led off the inning with an infield single and scored on an RBI double by McHugh before Hogue ended Piper's outing with a two-run long ball. Reliever
Tucker Bougie walked DeCriscio, who eventually scored an unearned run on Advincula's two-out error.
Felton earned a victory to improve to 5-3 on the season, while Shaffner's three innings of work earned him his fifth save.
McHugh (3-5, 2 R, 2B, HR, 3 RBI) and Fraasman (3-5, RBI) both had three of NC State's 13 hits, while Luke Nixon (2-5) had two and Hogue (1-4, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI) drove in pair. Eight of NC State's nine starters had at least one hit.
The series continues Friday (6 pm PT) and Saturday (2 pm) with a live stream of both remaining contests available on ACCNX/ESPN+.
