No. 18 Cal Suffers Setback In Raleigh
RALEIGH, N.C. – The No. 18 California women's tennis team fell to the 12th-ranked NC State Wolfpack 4-0 on Friday at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.
Â
Cal is now 11-7 (8-3 ACC). NC State improved to 14-5 (9-2).
Â
The Golden Bears earned an impressive doubles win from 10th-ranked
Jessica Alsola and
Mao Mushika, who defeated third-ranked Gabriella Broadfoot and Maddy Zampardo 6-4 on court one. Earlier this season, the two Bears beat the top-ranked doubles team – Melodie Collard and Elaine Chervinsky – to clinch the doubles point of an eventual 4-1 win at then-No. 2 Virginia. That feat earned Mushika and Alsola the ACC Doubles Team of the Week award.
Â
But this time, the Wolfpack claimed wins on courts two and three to take the doubles point.
Â
NC State earned singles wins on courts four and two before clinching its win on court three, where Cal senior
Lan Mi, ranked 43rd, lost to 109th-ranked Broadfoot 6-7(1), 4-6, 6-3.
"Jess and Mao beat the No. 3 doubles team in the nation, so that's a definite highlight," Cal head coach
Amanda Augustus said. "The doubles point on court three was close and Lan (Mi) and Greta (Greta Lucchina) almost pulled it out. Doubles overall was very, very tight.
Â
"The score doesn't indicate how competitive the matches were. Three singles matches went to three sets, and this was a very close match with a very high level of tennis from both teams. It's only going to help us as we get ready for one more regular-season match and then get ready for the postseason."
The Bears end the regular season Sunday, when they play at No. 34 Wake Forest, and then move onto the ACC Championship, which starts Tuesday in Cary, North Carolina.
