Cal Ends Road Trip With Win At Sacramento State

Golden Bears Score Twice In Top Of Ninth In 6-5 Victory

SACRAMENTO – The California baseball team (16-12) scored twice in the top of the ninth inning in a 6-5 road win over Sacramento State (15-13) on a chilly Tuesday evening at John Smith Field to wrap up a season-long nine-game road trip with the Bears winning seven of the nine contests. Jarren Advincula (4-5, 2 R) tied a career-high with four hits and had his first four-hit game of the season as one of several Golden Bears' heroes.

Advincula led off the top of the ninth inning with a single to get the Bears two-run rally started and advanced to third on the play when the ball got by Sacramento State leftfielder Luis Pimentel-Guerrero for an error. Alex Birge then singled up the middle past a drawn-in infield to plate Advincula with the game-tying run. Birge then moved to second when Dominic Smaldino walked and scored the game-winner on Jacob French's RBI single up the middle.

The Hornets threatened in the bottom of the ninth by getting base runners to first and second on a Jakob Poturnak leadoff single and a Pimentel-Guerrero one-out walk. The next batter Elie Kligman flew out to Cal centerfielder Seth Gwynn for the second out but the runners moved up to second and third on the play representing the tying and winning runs when Gwynn lost the ball while trying to throw it back to the infield and was charged with an error, but winning pitcher Cole Tremain struck out Michael Perazzo on three pitches to turn back the Hornets.

Cal returns to Stu Gordon Stadium for its next four games beginning with a three-game ACC set Friday-Sunday against No. 6/7/7 Clemson (6/2/1 pm PT) followed by a nonconference tilt with Pacific next Monday (6 pm PT). Live streams of all four home contests will be available on ACCNX/ESPN+.
