Cal Set NCAA Record, Two Program Records On Opening Day
FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - The No. 3 California men's swimming & diving team claimed its second consecutive national championship in the 800-yard freestyle relay in record-setting time while setting another program record in the 200-yard medley relay on the opening day of the NCAA Championships at Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatics Center.
In the 800 free relay, the quartet of
Jack Alexy,
Gabriel Jett,
Destin Lasco and
Lucas Henveaux set an NCAA, meet, U.S. Open and program record with a time of 5:59.75, the first team ever to swim under the six-minute barrier. Cal lowered its own NCAA record time of 6:02.26, which was set last year at the 2024 NCAA Championships. Alexy opened the event with a 1:30.02 split, followed by Jett with a personal-best split of 1:29.16. Lasco clocked his personal best with a 1:29.10 split, while Henveaux finished the nail-biter race with a 1:31.47 split, his personal best.
In the first event of the evening, the Bears set a program record in the 200-yard medley with the lineup of Bjorn Seeliger,
Yamato Okadome,
Dare Rose and
Jack Alexy after clocking a 1:20.76 to finish third in the event.
Through two events, Texas leads the standings with 74 points, Cal follows closely behind with 72 points, Georgia and Indiana tied for third (54), and rounding out the top five is NC State (50).
The NCAA Championships resume tomorrow at 10 a.m. PT with the prelim sessions of the 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard individual medley relay, 50-yard freestyle and 1-meter dive.
