MORAGA – Carl Schmidt (2-4, HR, 6 RBI) blasted his first career grand slam and drove in a career-high six runs, while
Cade Campbell (5-6, 2 RBI) and
PJ Moutzouridis (4-5, 3 RBI) registered career highs in hits to lead the California baseball team to a 13-7 nonconference win over Saint Mary's (11-9) on Tuesday at Louis Guisto Field at Brother Ronald Gallagher Stadium.
Jarren Advincula (3-6, RBI, 2 SB) also stayed red hot with his third consecutive three-hit game that extended his hit streak to six in a row.
Cole Tremain (2-1) was credited with the victory on the mound as the second of four Cal pitchers in a contest in which the Bears never trailed. Tremain scattered three hits and a pair of unearned runs over 2.2 innings of work.
The Bears jumped out to an early 4-0 lead when the first three hitters in the top of the second –
Max Handron,
Seth Gwynn and
Jacob French – singled to load the bases for Schmitdt's opposite field homer over the right field fence.
Saint Mary's got two runs back with one in each the second and third innings off Cal starter
Jordy Lopez (3.0 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 SO, 1 HBP) in his first career start for the Bears. Brett Williams' two-out RBI single scored Aiden Taurek in the second, while Taurek doubled home Brian Duroff with two outs in the third.
Cal scored four more times in the fourth to increase its advantage to 8-2 with RBI singles by Advincula and Moutzouridis sandwiching a two-run single from Campbell. Gwynn and Schmidt had set up the four-run rally by drawing walks.
Saint Mary's answered with a single run in the fourth when Tanner Griffith singled to lead off the inning and chase Lopez, stole second and came around to score on back-to-back groundouts.
The Gaels closed the margin to 8-7 with a pair of two-run innings in the bottom of the sixth and seventh. Saint Mary's got back-to-back two-out RBI singles from Micah Nicholson and Cody Kashimoto to plate a pair of unearned runs in the sixth before a sacrifice fly from Taurek and an RBI single from Diego Castellanos plated two more in the seventh.
But Cal reestablished control with its third four-run frame of the contest in the eighth. Campbell started the rally with a leadoff single that was his fifth hit of the game and moved to second on
Ryan Tayman's walk before scoring on a Moutzouridis RBI single. The Bears added a second run on French's sacrifice fly before Schmidt capped the rally with a two-run double off the base of the fence in center field.
Cal scored the game's final run in the top of the ninth when
Dominic Smaldino and Tayman walked before Moutzouridis drove Smaldino home with an RBI single.
Logan Piper (2.0 IP, 1 H) faced the minimum six batters over the Gaels' final two trips to the plate and ended the contest by inducing Rees Kent to hit into a game-ending double play.
Taurek (2-3, 2B, 2 RBI), Castellanos (2-4, RBI) and Williams (2-4, RBI) each had two-hit games for Saint Mary's with Taurek also driving in a pair.
Saint Mary's starter Justin Santiago (0-1) took the loss, allowing four runs (all earned) and seven hits in 3.0 innings. Santiago was the first of eight Gael pitchers.
Cal (10-10, 2-4 ACC) continues a season-long nine-game road trip that began Tuesday at Saint Mary's with a three-game ACC series Friday-Sunday (6 pm, 2 pm 1 pm) at No. 14/23/14 Stanford (15-3, 5-1 ACC). A live video stream of all three games will be available on ACCNX/ESPN+.
