MANHATTAN BEACH – The No. 7 California beach volleyball team split its final two duals of the East Meets West Invitational Saturday in Manhattan Beach against a pair of future conference opponents. The Golden Bears swept No. 11 LSU 5-0 to start the day but were defeated by No. 12 Texas 3-2 to end the weekend.
 
Cal (11-5) earned its fourth ranked win of the season and its first in sweeping fashion, but bookended the weekend with losses to lower ranked opponents. All five of the Bears' losses this season have come from ranked teams by a score of 3-2.
 
With a court-three win vs the Tigers, senior Alexandria Young-Gomez became the sixth Bear in program history to reach 70 career wins. After dropping the first set in extra points, Young-Gomez and her partner, junior Marilu Pally, bounced back to win the match in three sets 20-22, 21-16, 15-10.
 
The court-one pair of sophomore Emma Donley and junior Portia Sherman picked up a pair of wins to improve to 3-1 on the weekend, as did seniors Ella Dreibholz and Ella Sears on court five.
 
The Bears will now get ready to head to Austin, Texas next weekend to rematch three of the teams they saw this weekend in the East vs West Tournament. Cal will face the Tigers, the Longhorns, FIU, and Georgia State.
