SAN JOSE – With the seniors leading the way, the No. 4 California women's water polo team defeated No. 17 San Jose State 18-11 in its MPSF opener on Saturday.

Ruby Swadling put in five goals for the second time this year, scoring twice in the first quarter and notching a second-half hat trick. Elena Flynn scored three goals for her team-leading seventh hat trick of the season.

The Golden Bears (12-1) did a lot of their damage in the first quarter, scoring on their first two possessions. Flynn took a pass from Rozanne Voorvelt on the Bears' first attempt to open the scoring. Goalkeeper Talia Fonseca made her first of four saves and Swadling made it 2-0 on the other end.

Cal ended the opening period with a 7-2 lead and six different goalscorers. Flynn scored her second goal early in the second and Miriam Bogachenko notched a first-half brace with two minutes to go, putting the Bears up 9-3.
