BERKELEY – The No. 9 California beach volleyball team swept its way through day one of the Battle of the Bay defeating both Pacific and UC Davis 5-0.
 
The Golden Bears (5-1), won all but one set in their home opener and have now won 27 of 30 matches.
  
Senior Alexandria Young-Gomez and junior Marilu Pally went 2-0 on the day with wins on courts two and three and are now 12-0 as a pair. Graduate student Christine DeRoos and junior Jenna Colligan and graduate student Maile Somera and junior Mila Vugrincic joined them as the other two duo to play in both matches.
 
Senior Ella Driebholz picked up her 82^nd win to move into to a tie fore second on the all-time wins list. She needs just one more to tie the record and two to break it.
 
Somera and sophomore Julia Capps both had milestones as well making their NCAA beach volleyball debuts and earning their first victories. Capps had never played in a collegiate match and Somera spent her last four seasons playing indoor volleyball at Yale.
 
The Bears are back at Clark Kerr tomorrow to face San Francisco (10 a.m.) and Sacramento State (2 p.m.).
