No. 5 Cal Tops No. 18 ASU, Falls To No. 3 Stanford
Underclassmen Show Out On Final Day Of Tri-Meet
BERKELEY. – The No. 5 California women's swimming & diving team defeated No. 18 Arizona State 233-107 but fell to No. 3 Stanford 190.5-147.5 its home-opener Sunday morning at Spieker Aquatics Complex in Berkeley. It was the second and final day of a tri-meet that was held in a double-dual format.
The day-two results mirrored that of yesterday's finish at Stanford's Avery Aquatic Center as the Golden Bears came into today leading the Sun Devils 132-66 and trailing the Cardinal 122.5-73.50.
Cal took full advantage of the home atmosphere from the jump with a win in the first event held at Spieker this season – the 800-yard freestyle relay. Sophomore
Mia West and freshmen
Claire Weinstein,
Teagan O'Dell, and
Ella Cosgrove recorded the fastest time in the nation so far this season with a 6:55.18 that is more than five seconds faster than the NCAA qualifying time.
For the second straight day, freshman
Silje Slyngstadli (2:09.54) cracked Cal's top-10 list notching the ninth-fastest 200-yard breaststroke in program history to take second in the event.
O'Dell celebrated her birthday with a pair of individual wins with NCAA qualifying times in the 200-yard backstroke and the 400-yard IM. Her backstroke time of 1:51.83 is the eighth-fastest in Cal history and her IM mark of 1:55.19 is the third-fastest in the country this season.
The Bears swept the podium in the 500-yard freestyle with three times lower than this year's NCAA standard. Weinstein took first at 4:39.23, followed by sophomore
Camille Henveaux in second at 4:41.64, and Cosgrove took third with a time of 4:43.15.
Cal capped the meet off with a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay with sophomore

Sydney Griscavage, and Weinstein touching the wall at 1:28.36.
The Bears will now look ahead to Nov. 7 when they welcome the Cardinal back to Spieker Aquatics Complex for their triple-distance meet. The first event is scheduled for 1 p.m. and admission is free.
