Bears Continue To Secure NCAA Qualifying Times
MINNEAPOLIS – The No. 4 California men's swimming & diving team took a commanding lead on day two of the Minnesota Invitational after the Golden Bears placed first in four events.
In the first event of the evening session, five Bears finished in the top eight of the 500-yard freestyle.
Gabriel Jett placed first in a time of 4:16.63, a season-best, as he secured an NCAA B-cut time.
Keaton Jones followed behind with a time of 4:16.76, while
Tyler Kopp and
Thackston McMullan finished fifth and sixth, respectively. Jones, Kopp and McMullan recorded an NCAA qualifying B-cut time, joining
Matthew Chai, who recorded a B-cut time of 4:20.64 in the morning session.
In the B-final,
Trent Frandson claimed first with a time of 4:21.27, earning an NCAA B-cut provisional time, which would've been good enough to finish seventh in the A-final.
In the 200-yard individual medley, Cal filled the top three spots as
Destin Lasco took first with a time of 1:42.72 while
Sean Swift (1:44.56) and
Carter Lancaster (1:45.01) followed to take second and third. All three improved on their NCAA B-cut times from the morning session. Jett also clocked an NCAA B-cut qualifying time of 1:41.89 during the prelims.
In the 50-yard freestyle, the Bears claimed all top eight spots in the A-final led by
Evan Petty (19.39), beating out
Nans Mazellier (19.40) by 0.01 seconds. Rounding out the top five were
Roman Jones (19.46), Bjorn Seeliger (19.52) and
Nikolas Antoniou (19.68). All top five finishers secured NCAA B-cut times, while
Lucca Battaglini won the B-final with an NCAA B-cut qualifying time of 19.42.
In the final event of the evening, Cal's A lineup of Petty, Mazellier, Battaglini and Jett recorded an NCAA B-cut provisional time of 1:16.75 to claim first-place honors in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
Through the second day of competition, the Bears lead with 683 points. Rounding out the standings are Minnesota (366), Harvard (329), UNLV (283) and Denver (253).
The meet resumes tomorrow at 8 a.m. PT with the prelims of the 100-yard butterfly, 400-yard individual medley, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke and 100-yard backstroke. Diving prelims begin at 11 a.m. PT, while the day wraps up with the finals beginning at 4 p.m. PT.
