LA JOLLA – The No. 1 California men's swimming & diving team had a dominating start to the Tritons Invitational after having first-place finishes in each event Friday afternoon to take a 144-81 lead after the first day of the invitational-style dual meet at UC San Diego.
 
In the opening event of the day, the 200-yard medley relay, the Golden Bears' A lineup of junior Evan Petty, freshman Zachary Tan, sophomore Samuel Quarles and freshman Nans Mazellier finished with a time of 1:29.86. Cal's B lineup of junior Tommy Roder, junior Luca Gissendaner, freshman August Vetsch and freshman Lucca Battaglini placed third with a final time of 1:30.45.
 
In the very next event, the 500-yard freestyle, five Bears finished in the top five spots, led by junior Matthew Chai with a time of 4:18.79. Sophomore Keaton Jones followed shortly afterward with a time of 4:20.70, along with senior Robin Hanson (4:25.81), graduate student Tyler Kopp (4:26.48) and Mazellier (4:30.90).
 
Senior Ziyad Saleem claimed the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 47.20, as he was the lone Bear in the top three spots in the event. The Bears took the first two spots in the 200-yard IM led by graduate student Matthew Jensen (1:47.82), followed by freshman Yamato Okadome (1:48.45).
 
Junior Colby Hatton touched first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 20.49, while Vetsch took the final event of the day, the 200-yard butterfly, with a time of 1:48.84.
 
Cal begins day two of the dual meet tomorrow against UC San Diego at 10 a.m. PT.
