Cal Ends Season As Bears Fall At NCAAs
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The 2017-18 season came to a close for California on Wednesday in the NCAA Singles Championship at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex. But all three Golden Bears – junior
Olivia Hauger and freshmen
Julia Rosenqvist and
Anna Bright – who played in the opening round of 64 will return to lead a talented squad in the fall.
Hauger – ranked 50th – entered NCAAs having won nine of her past 10 completed matches. Playing a morning match, Hauger ran into an experienced opponent in Florida's 18th-ranked and Nos. 9-16-seeded Anna Danilina, who prevailed, 7-5, 6-0. The All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention finished the year with a 24-8 singles record.
In the early afternoon at Wake, the 36th-ranked Rosenqvist took the first set from the 39th-ranked Megan McCray of Oklahoma State. But the Swede's first semester of college tennis came to an end when she ultimately fell, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3. An All-Pac-12 First-Team member, Rosenqvist completed the season with a 13-10 record.
In Cal's last match of the day, the 45th-ranked Bright lost to Denver's 62nd-ranked Julia O'Loughlin, 7-6(1), 6-2, in another upset to snap an eight-match winning streak. Bright, who won a team-high 35 times in singles this year, closed her freshman campaign with a 35-10 record and a spot on the All-Pac-12 Second Team.
Cal head coach
Amanda Augustus is looking forward to what next season will bring with the three Bears – with their first experience at NCAA singles under their belts – returning.
"It's invaluable experience for all three of them," Augustus said. "We were one of only seven teams with three players in NCAA singles, and I think there were only 10 freshmen in the draw, and we had two of them. Anna had an outstanding freshman year to get ranked as high as 27th in the country, and doing that in her first year is a big deal. Julia just arrived in January, and getting chosen for the postseason is really hard to do when you've only arrived a few months earlier. And Olivia has worked really hard and improved every year she's been here. That shows the level that these three are at.
"It didn't go our way today, but everyone in this tournament is good. All three of them competed very hard and represented Cal well. This experience is only going to motivate them and motivate their teammates. We have a great group coming back, and they're excited to get going."
