Cal Falls At Texas In NCAA Round Of 32
AUSTIN, Texas - California couldn't overcome a strong Texas team on Saturday, as the 11th-seeded and 12th-ranked host knocked No. 34 Cal out of the NCAA tournament with a 4-0 result at the Texas Tennis Center. The round of 32 match ended when Golden Bear freshman
Jacob Brumm lost to Colin Markes, 6-1, 1-6, 6-1, at court-six singles.
Cal ends the team portion of the season with a 12-10 record. The Longhorns improve to 19-6 and advance to the NCAA round of 16 at Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
The Bears will send seniors
Billy Griffith and
J.T. Nishimura to the NCAA Doubles Championship in Winston-Salem, with that tournament starting on May 24. Griffith will also play in the NCAA Singles Championship starting May 23 at Wake.
The Longhorns clinched the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead when the 39th-ranked Harrison Scott and Christian Sigsgaard upset Cal's 33rd-ranked pair of Griffith and Nishimura, 6-3, on court one. Cal sophomore
Dominic Barretto and freshman
Can Kaya also lost to Markes and Yuya Ito, 6-2, on court three.
Â
Cal won two of six first sets in singles, as freshman
Ben Draper won his first set against the 93rd-ranked Leonardo Telles, 6-4, on court four and Nishimura – playing in what turned out to be the last singles match of his college career – topped the 52nd-ranked Ito, 6-4, on court two.
Â
But that wasn't enough, as first Texas won on court five (the 104th-ranked Rodrigo Banzer beat freshman
Paul Barretto 6-4, 6-0), won on court three (the 89th-ranked Scott defeated freshman
Jack Molloy, 6-2, 6-4) and then ended the match on court six.
"We had a tough match with Texas today, and our guys left everything they had out there," said
Peter Wright, Cal's Director of Men's Tennis. "Credit to Texas for the year they had, and they certainly played well today.
Â
"As this was our last match of the year, I had the opportunity to reflect on some of the special things that we experienced. I'm so proud of our two seniors,
Billy Griffith and
J.T. Nishimura, because they led this team of seven freshmen, and two sophomores to some incredible experiences. Our guys came a long way this season under Billy and J.T.'s leadership, and I'm so encouraged by what I see in the future for these guys. The NCAAs are the pinnacle of the year, and our guys played with tremendous courage this weekend. We'll learn from today's match, and we've dedicated ourselves to coming back next year and making a bigger impact."
