Maria Smith won in straight sets at court-four singles to secure the win over Oregon.
BERKELEY – California picked up an important Pac-12 Conference win as the 49th-ranked Golden Bears upset 26th-ranked Oregon Ducks, 5-2, in their last regular-season home match on Saturday at the Hellman Tennis Complex.Â
Maria Smith clinched the victory when she beat the Ducks' Daniela Nasser, 6-4, 6-4, at court-four singles to give Cal a 4-2 lead. Cal freshman
Hana Mraz tacked on a court-six win to make the final score 5-2.
Â
The match had been slated to take place Friday, but rain pushed the match back one day.
Â
After winning twice this week – including a 7-0, nonconference win over Sacramento State on Thursday –
Cal improved its conference record to 5-2 and improved overall to 10-6, while the Ducks' conference record now stands at 3-4 (12-7 overall).
Â
With three nationally ranked doubles teams on the roster, Oregon not surprisingly did well in doubles. The Ducks' unranked duo of Julia Lilien and Paiton Wagner first defeated Mraz and Smith, 6-3, on court three, before the 48th-ranked pair of junior
Olivia Hauger and freshman
Julia Rosenqvist topped the 69th-ranked team of Eshet and Shweta Sangwan, 6-1, on court one. Oregon clinched the point on court two, as the 64th-ranked Alyssa Tobita and Rifanti Kahfiani bested freshmen
Anna Bright and
Vivian Glozman.
Â
The Ducks increased their lead to 2-0 in singles, when the 95th-ranked Tobita upset the 41st-ranked Rosenqvist, 7-6(4), 6-4, on court one.
Â
But that was it for Oregon, which was without Sangwan – slated to play court-one singles – after doubles.
Â
Cal swept the remaining matches, including at court five, on which Glozman lost the first set to Wagner. But the first-year Bear rallied to prevail, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3, and lift Cal to a 3-2 lead. After Smith secured the win, Mraz ended the day with a 7-6(3), 6-7(5), 1-0(8) triumph over Kahfiani on court six.
Â
"I'm really glad to see us get another conference win and another conference win here at Hellman," Cal head coach
Amanda Augustus said. "I really liked the way we responded after not playing great doubles on a couple courts today. That's the big thing we'll spend the next week working on, because we can make life easier on ourselves by playing better doubles. We'll work on that.
Â
"In the singles, we really did a good job of making the necessary adjustments on each courts, because our girls didn't end up playing who they thought they were going to play, since there was a lineup change after the doubles. We really handled that well. I was also pleased to see how we closed out a lot of the matches. Looking forward to continuing to battle with this team. They competed really hard today, so I was proud of them."
Â
The Bears next travel to the Pacific Northwest to play at Washington on April 13 and at Washington State on April 14.
