BERKELEY – California routed Sacramento State 7-0 on Thursday under cloudy skies at the Hellman Tennis Complex, with freshman Anna Bright clinching the victory with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Ana Loaiza Esquivias at court-one singles.

The Golden Bears, who improved to 9-6 after beating the Hornets (7-11) in the nonconference match, rebounded in fine fashion after their last match, a 4-0 loss at Arizona State.

Cal quickly took a 1-0 lead when the Bears won the doubles point. First the pair of Bright and freshman Vivian Glozman bested Sofia Gulnova and Shamika Dhar, 6-1, on court two, and then the 48th-ranked pair of junior Olivia Hauger and freshman Julia Rosenqvist knocked off Maria Fernanda Gonzalez and Carolina Chernyetsky, 6-2, on court one to clinch the point.

The Bears continued their strong start in singles, as they won all six first sets. Glozman doubled the lead to 2-0 when she topped Sofia Wicker, 6-0, 6-0, on court four, freshman Jasie Dunk followed with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Jenna Dorian on court five and then Bright lifted Cal to a 4-0 clinching score with her win on court one.

Soon after Bright's win, the 44th-ranked Hauger beat Fernanda Gonzalez, 6-2, 6-2, on court two, junior Maria Smith beat Gulnova, 6-3, 6-1, on court three and sophomore Alexis Nelson defeated Dhar, 6-3, 6-4, on court six to wrap up the match.

With rain affecting several of Cal's recent home matches, officials moved the start of Thursday's match ahead one hour to 12:30 p.m. to avoid potential rain later in the afternoon. But rain did not become a factor.

"It was good for us to get back out here, around some rain showers, and get a good win," Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. "We didn't lose a set in singles, so that was good to see. We just needed to get out here, feel the ball and really go for our shots. In a situation like this weekend when we only have one conference match, it's always nice to get a second match to keep up the routine of playing multiple matches in a week. Some different people got the opportunity to play today, so that was nice to see.

"Hopefully we get our next conference match in this weekend. But if the weather doesn't cooperate tomorrow, Saturday looks pretty good."

Cal returns to Pac-12 action when it plays Oregon Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Hellman. The Oregon match had been scheduled for Friday at 1:30 p.m., but rain forced officials to move the match to Saturday. Please check the team's Twitter @calwomenstennis and CalBears.com for updates.
