Julia Rosenqvist and the Bears could see Stanford again in the Pac-12 tournament.
STANFORD, Calif. – Forty-second-ranked California ended the regular season with a 4-0 loss at No. 20 Stanford on Friday at the Taube Family Tennis Center. The Cardinal clinched the victory – and the Pac-12's regular-season title – when 22nd-ranked Michaela Gordon beat 34th-ranked Cal freshman
Julia Rosenqvist, 6-2, 6-4, at court-one singles.
Â
Cal's record is now 11-8 overall and 6-4 in the Pac-12. Stanford improved to 15-3 overall, captured the conference title with a 9-0 record and claimed the top seed in the upcoming Pac-12 Championship tournament. The Bears' finish in the Pac-12's regular-season and their seed in the upcoming tournament will be determined by the end of the weekend, though Cal was fourth in the conference at the start of this week.
Â
Despite a one-sided loss at court-one doubles on Friday, Cal had a chance to claim the doubles point. Facing the third-ranked Gordon and Emily Arbuthnott on court one, Cal's 52nd-ranked pair of Rosenqvist and junior
Olivia Hauger lost, 6-1. When Cal freshmen
Anna Bright and
Vivian Glozman upset the 56th-ranked duo of Caroline Lampl and Kimberly Yee, 7-5, on court two, the Bears were looking good with junior
Maria Smith and freshman
Hana Mraz playing a close match on court three. But Stanford's Melissa Lord and Janice Shin ultimately won that court, 7-5, to take a 1-0 lead.
Â
Cal dropped five of six first sets in singles, with the 48th-ranked Hauger capturing the first set on court three against the 102nd-ranked Lampl, 7-6(1), Down 1-0 in the second set, Hauger didn't get a chance to finish her match before Stanford clinched to end the day.
Â
Stanford took a 2-0 lead when Smith lost to the 45th-ranked Arbuthnott, 6-2, 6-0, on court four and then the Cardinal took a 3-0 lead when the 100th-ranked Higuchi knocked off Mraz, 6-2, 6-1, on court six. The Big Slam concluded with the court-one result.
Â
"As usual it was a really good match between us and Stanford," Cal head coach
Amanda Augustus said. "I thought we played much better doubles today. We won on court two and we had a deuce point on court three, and we were in position to win the doubles point. It was good to see improvement there.
Â
"In singles, this is only the second time we played clinch-clinch. We're getting used to that; that's what we'd be playing in postseason. But we were in winning position in three of the other courts that didn't finish. We just have to start a little quicker. Hopefully we get to play Stanford next week in Ojai."
