Bellevue, Wash., product Vivian Glozman won in doubles and singles against UW.
SEATTLE – California freshmen
Anna Bright and
Vivian Glozman, in her homecoming, won in doubles and singles on Friday the 13th, but that wasn't enough for the 45th-ranked Golden Bears, who lost, 5-2, at Washington in a Pac-12 Conference match.
The Huskies clinched the win when UW's 22nd-ranked Stacey Fung beat Cal's 40th-ranked
Julia Rosenqvist, 6-4, 7-5, at court-one singles to make the score 4-1. The teams split the last two matches to end up with the 5-2 score.
Glozman, a product of Bellevue, Washington, which is 10 miles from Seattle, defeated UW's Kenadi Hance, 6-2, 6-2, at court-five singles.
Cal's record now stands at 10-7 (5-3 Pac-12). UW improved to 14-9 (4-4 Pac-12).
The Bears got off to a good start in doubles, as Glozman and Bright beat Hance and Alexis and Prokupuik, 6-2, on court two. But then 26th-ranked Miki Kobayashi/Vanessa Wong defeated Cal's 36th-ranked
Olivia Hauger and Julie Rosenqvist, 6-2, on court one and the Huskies clinched the point on court three, as UW's Stacey Fung and Katarina Kopcalic beat freshman
Hana Mraz and junior
Maria Smith, 6-3.
"We just need to play better doubles," Cal head coach
Amanda Augustus said. "You can't just play well on one court in our conference. You have to play well on all three courts. That didn't start us off in the direction that we wanted. We made some really good adjustments coming into the singles. But we really can't be giving the other team the confidence boost of winning the doubles point. That's something I definitely want to see us do better at tomorrow."
In singles, Bright, ranked 36th, lost her first set to Miki Kobayashi on court three. But the first-year Bear rebounded to take the match, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.
"There was some really good tennis on all the singles courts," Augustus said. "That was definitely a great comeback win from Anna today. Her opponent came out in good form against her, but Anna worked it out. It took a while but she got it done. Vivian played really well today in her hometown and won in both singles and doubles. That was really good to see. That's what these matches are about. You have to be ready to play on every court. It's a quick turnaround, and we'll be right back at it tomorrow. I have confidence we'll adjust and get it done tomorrow."
