No. 31 Cal Defeats Dons 4-0

BERKELEY – With three Barretto brothers playing in Tuesday's match between California and San Francisco, there was a decent chance that one of them would decide the result. Fortunately for the No. 31 Golden Bears, it was Paul Barretto – the youngest of the three who played at the Hellman Tennis Complex – who wound up clinching victory in a 4-0 result against the Dons.

Rain briefly delayed the match early in singles, and with rain threatening again late in the match, Barretto defeated Paul Giraud, 6-2, 6-4, at court-five singles to secure the win.

Cal improved its record to 10-6 after capturing the nonconference contest, while the Dons fell to 6-15.

"The rain held off today, and we played another solid doubles point," said Peter Wright, Cal's Director of Men's Tennis. "USF is a solid team, and they've been battling through some injuries. Their guys played with a lot of heart today."

In doubles, Cal sophomore Dominic Barretto, one of Paul's older brothers, teamed with freshman Can Kaya to beat USF's Paul Giraud and Marco Barretto – the oldest of the brothers – 6-2 on court three. The 20th-ranked pair of Cal seniors Billy Griffith and J.T. Nishimura then defeated Johan Joenhagen and Ryan Marker, 6-3, on court one to clinch the point.

Freshman Jacob Brumm gave Cal a 2-0 lead when he beat Marco Barretto, 6-0, 6-2, at court-six singles, and freshman Ben Draper made the score 3-0 when he topped Oliver Poysti, 6-4, 6-4, on court four. Paul Barretto – a member of Cal's talented seven-player freshman class – ended the day before the next round of raindrops began in earnest.

"It was a special day for the Barretto family because for the first time ever, all three Barretto brothers played in the same college match," Wright said. "They are all such class acts on and off the courts, and they've been a major part of the NorCal tennis scene for many years.

"As for our team, this win gets us one step closer to the NCAA Championships in May, and that's been one of our goals since the beginning of the season."

The Bears return to Pac-12 play when they take on No. 4 Stanford in the Big Slam on Friday at 3 p.m. on the Farm.
