Â
In doubles, ASU got off to a strong start when its 48th-ranked Lauryn John-Baptiste and Ilze Hattingh knocked off Cal's 52nd-ranked duo of junior
Olivia Hauger and freshman
Julia Rosenqvist, 6-2 on court one. The other two matches finished almost simultaneously, with the Bears falling in both, as Cal freshmen
Anna Bright and
Vivian Glozman lost to No 35. Savannah Slaysman/Tereza Kolarova, 6-4, on court two and the pair of Smith and freshman
Hana Mraz lost to ASU's Sasa Klanecek/Nicole Fossa, 6-3, on court three.
Â
The Bears trailed 2-0 after the 36th-ranked Rosenqvist lost to No. 56 John-Baptiste, 6-2, 7-5, at court-one singles, and the Bears fell behind 3-0 when Mraz fell to Kolarova, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, on court six, until court four decided the match.
Â
"We didn't come out in doubles as aggressively as we like to," Cal head coach
Amanda Augustus said. "ASU is always tough in doubles, so you really have to bring it to them. I don't think we did a good job on any of our doubles courts today. We put ourselves in a bit of a hole.
Â
"That gave ASU confidence, and they competed really hard as they usually do through the singles. We were not striking the ball as cleanly today as I would've liked. On several courts we were in good position. But I think we definitely have some things to work on when we get home to make sure that we get back on track in Pac-12 play."
Â
The Bears close out their regular-season home matches when they host Sacramento State on April 5 and Oregon on April 6 at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
