LA JOLLA, Calif. – California has already improved on its showing in the Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championships last year, as three teams of Golden Bears advanced to the round of 16 on Friday at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club.
 
Cal's top pair this year – the second-seeded and 30th-ranked pair of seniors Billy Griffith and J.T. Nishimura – beat Stanford's Eric Fomba and Sam Torchetta, 8-4, in the round of 32, six days after the Bears lost two doubles matches and the doubles point to the full Cardinal team. Also in the round of 32, Cal's ninth-seeded pair of freshmen Ben Draper and Jack Molloy defeated Benjamin Gollin/Warren Wood, 8-5, and the team of Cal freshmen Paul Barretto and Jacob Brumm upset the fifth-seeded Alec Adamson/Eli Whittle, 8-2, to reach Saturday's round of 16.
 
The Cal pair of sophomore Dominic Barretto and freshman Can Kaya beat Pomona Pitzer's Kalyan Chadalavada and Jed Kronenberg, 8-2, in the round of 128. But the Bears fell to Stanford's third-seeded Timothy Sah and David Wilczynski, 9-7, in their next match.
 
In the third round of the consolation draw, Cal freshmen Thomas Wright and Jackson Suh (Cal) lost a tight match to Alex Ching and Sean Ellerbrock, 8-7.
 
Last season, only the duo of Cal associate head coach Tyler Browne and then-senior Andre Goransson got to the round of 32 for the Bears at the Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championships. The two lost in the round of 16.
 
The annual doubles tournament will end on Sunday.
