Vivian Glozman won at court-four singles to clinch the win over Colorado.
BERKELEY – With rain clouds looming, California squeezed in a 4-2 victory over Colorado on Friday at the Hellman Tennis Complex, as
Vivian Glozman clinched the Pac-12 Conference match with a court-four singles win. The teams started the match with singles to try to complete an official match before potential rain, and once singles ended, they decided to not play doubles.
Â
Glozman, a freshman, held off Louise Ronaldson to win a close match, 7-5, 7-5.
Â
Cal improved its record to 6-5 (2-1 in the Pac-12). Colorado is now 8-5 (1-2 Pac-12).
Â
The Buffaloes took a 1-0 lead when Kyra Wojcik defeated Cal freshman
Hana Mraz, 6-3, 6-1, on court five.
Â
Cal played a typical freshman-heavy lineup, but it was junior
Olivia Hauger who notched the Bears' first win on the day. The 32nd-ranked Hauger topped Chloe Hule, 6-2, 6-1, on court two to tie the match, 1-1.
Â
Freshman
Anna Bright, ranked 35th, followed with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Colorado's 113th-ranked Linda Huang on court one, and a couple of minutes later junior
Maria Smith gave Cal a 3-1 lead with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Jeannez Daniel on court three.
Â
After Glozman clinched, freshman
Jasie Dunk took Colorado's Brigitte Beck to three sets on court six, but the Buffalo prevailed, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, to end the match.
Â
"We haven't had a lot of practice because the weather's been up and down," Cal head coach
Amanda Augustus said. "We came out and adjusted to a team we're not quite as familiar with. I was really glad we were able to get the match in today and get another conference win. It's good to get this win under our belt. On pretty much all the courts we played the way we wanted to play. We had to make a few adjustments. Overall, I was pleased with the win today.
Â
"Tomorrow will probably be a bit of the same in terms of finding enough time to get the match in around the rain."
Â
Cal plays Utah in another Pac-12 match on Saturday at 12 p.m. at Hellman.
