No. 23 Cal Falls At No. 10 Illinois, 4-0
URBANA, Ill. - Twenty-third-ranked California dropped the first match of its road trip, 4-0, to No. 10 Illinois at the Atkins Tennis Center on Friday evening.
The host Illini clinched when Caleb Chakravarthi defeated Cal sophomore
Dominic Barretto, 6-2, 6-3, at court-six singles.
The Bears lost the doubles point when Illinois clinched on court two, as Zeke Clark and Aleks Kovacevic topped Cal freshmen
Ben Draper and
Jack Molloy, 6-2.
The Golden Bears' record now stands at 3-2, while the Illini improve to 4-1.
"Illinois played well tonight, and they are a well-coached team, disciplined team," said
Peter Wright, Cal's Director of Men's Tennis. "We clearly have lots of work to do, but there were some bright spots in this match in terms of how we competed. We're suffering from inconsistency in our process and decision-making, but I like the fight we're bringing to each match, and we'll get beetter."
Cal next plays at Michigan at 12 p.m. ET on Sunday.
