LOS ANGELES - California improved on its showing across town at USC on Friday, but the 17th-ranked Golden Bears still fell to No. 9 UCLA, 5-2, on Saturday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.

Trailing 5-0, the Bears got wins from Julia Rosenqvist and Maria Smith to produce the day's final score. Rosenqvist, a freshman, upset the 73rd-ranked Terri Fleming, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4, at court-three singles, while Smith, a junior, topped Ayan Broomfield, 7-5, 1-6, 1-0(6), on court four.

The Bruins had clinched the overall victory when the 40th-ranked Abi Altick knocked off Cal freshman Vivian Glozman, 6-4, 6-1, on court five.

The Bears, who fell to USC, 4-3, on Friday, saw their record move to 4-3 after Saturday's nonconference result. UCLA improved to 8-2.

Earlier on Saturday, UCLA clinched the doubles point when the pair of Ena Shibahara and Alaina Miller beat Smith and freshman Jasie Dunk, 6-3, on court three. The new pair of Rosenqvist and junior Olivia Hauger also lost to the Bruins' 38th-ranked duo of Fleming and Jada Hart, 6-3, on court one.

"Overall we played a lot better today," Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. "UCLA, I think, has played a lot more tough matches so far this season. They are more polished, and it showed. But I thought in doubles we did a pretty good job. We played their ranked doubles teams really tough. We'll use this and make some adjustments, but doubles wise we took a giant step forward today.

"In singles there were some bright spots. Julia had a really good win over Fleming today after not playing her best yesterday. Maria Smith keeps bringing it and competing really hard. We have some good takeaways from this. This is basically our first back-to-back, tough match weekend of the year, so we just have to get a few more matches under our belt. We look forward to playing both these teams in a couple weeks in Berkeley. We'll really be ready for that."

Cal returns to Berkeley to host Pepperdine on March 3 at 12 p.m. at the Hellman Tennis Complex. The Bears then host USC on March 9 and UCLA on March 10 in Pac-12 Conference matches.
