LOS ANGELES – Seventeenth-ranked California lost to No. 48 USC, 4-3, on Friday at the Trojans' Marks Tennis Stadium to snap a three-match winning streak. Cal freshman Julia Rosenqvist fell to Rianna Valdes, 6-7(3), 7-6(3), 6-1, at court-three singles to clinch USC's victory in the the nonconference dual match.

Cal's record now stands at 4-2. The Trojans improved to 5-2.

The Bears lost twice in doubles, with the Trojans clinching the point when Gabby Smith and Becca Weissmann knocked off Cal juniors Olivia Hauger and Maria Smith, 6-2, on court two. Earlier, the 39th-ranked pair of Valdes and Angela Kulikov bested Rosenqvist and Cal freshman Anna Bright, 6-1, on court one.

Freshmen Hana Mraz made played her first singles match for the Bears and started out well, winning her first set against Constance Branstine, 6-1, on court six. But Mraz eventually lost to the Trojan, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3, which gave USC a 3-1 lead.

After Valdes' victory made the score 4-2 to clinch the match for the Trojans, the 42nd-ranked Hauger upset the 30th-ranked Smith, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, in the Cal junior's first time playing at court-one singles. That result made the final score 4-3.

Cal also got wins from Smith, who upset the 110th-ranked Madison Westby, 6-2, 1-6, 6-0, on court four and from the 29th-ranked Bright, who topped Weissmann, 6-3, 6-1, in the young Bear's first match at court-two singles.

"It was a good match, a competitive match," Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. "We didn't get off to the best start in the doubles, so I think tomorrow we'll definitely have to make some adjustments in doubles. We didn't come out with the aggressiveness that I felt we needed to on all the courts.

"But having said that I think we did a great job in singles of rebounding and getting to work. We competed pretty hard. Some people played at some new positions today. We had some good wins. This is a good match. We'll take it and make a few adjustments tomorrow. I'm excited to see us compete again tomorrow."

Cal plays at UCLA on Saturday at 12 p.m. in another nonconference match.
