Jasie Dunk won at court-five singles to secure Cal's win over UCSB on a windy day at Hellman.
BERKELEY – California was back in action for the first time since early this month, as freshman
Jasie Dunk clinched the No. 15 Golden Bears' 5-2 victory over UC Santa Barbara on a blustery and chilly Sunday afternoon at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
Dunk defeated the Gauchos' Stephanie Yamada 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, in one of four three-set matches.
Cal improved to 4-1 on the season, while UCSB fell to 3-6.
Hana Mraz, another Cal freshman, made her college debut on Sunday, as she paired with junior
Maria Smith to beat UCSB's Amanda Atanasson and Lise Sentenac, 6-4, at court-three doubles. The Bears clinched the doubles point when the pair of junior
Olivia Hauger and freshman
Vivian Glozman beat Yamada and Amit Lev Avri, 6-4, on court two.
The unranked Gauchos won two of the first three singles matches. When Glozman lost to Lev Avri, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, on court four, UCSB tied the match tied at 2-2.
Cal retook the lead when the 28th-ranked
Anna Bright beat Palina Dubavets, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, on court one, and then Dunk sealed the victory as her win gave the Bears a 4-2 lead. Smith ended the day when she won another three setter, 3-6, 7-6(3), 6-4, over Atanasson on court three.
After several recent 60-plus degree days in the San Francisco Bay Area, the temperature rarely rose into the mid-50s on Sunday, when swirling winds also blew through the outdoor courts.
"This was a really good win for the team because the weather conditions were less than ideal," Cal head coach
Amanda Augustus said. "But I think it was a good building experience for this team, because you need to learn how to work your way through matches when not everything is perfect. I was pleased with the resiliency I saw from everybody. We were excited to see the debut of
Hana Mraz today and excited to get her out there for a victory in her first match.
"Santa Barbara competed hard today, and that was good for us to have to push a little bit on the courts."
The Bears had previously played on Feb. 3 in a 5-2 win over Santa Clara at Hellman. They've won three consecutive matches by the same score, as the Bears bested San Diego State, 5-2, on Feb. 1 at Hellman.
"It went by very quickly," Augustus said of the previous two weeks. "We would've liked to have had more dual matches in that period, but we just worked on things, got fitter and turned our focus to the outdoor season. We have a good run of matches coming up that we're looking forward to."
Cal heads to Los Angeles this week to play at USC on Friday and at UCLA on Saturday.
