Cal Post Multiple Wins in Honolulu

HONOLULU – California women's tennis got wins from Maria Smith, Anna Bright and newcomer Julia Rosenqvist in singles and went unbeaten in doubles on Sunday at the Weinman Foundation Invitational at the UH Tennis Complex.

The 27th-ranked Bright knocked off TCU's 59th-ranked Aleksandra Zenovska, 6-2, 6-1, Smith beat TCU's Stevie Kennedy, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, and Rosenqvist claimed her first college singles victory with a 7-5, 6-4 result against the Horned Frogs' Alexis Pereira.

Cal dropped three matches in singles, with senior Audrey Mayer falling to TCU's 71st-ranked Aleksa Cveticanin, 6-0, 6-3, sophomore Alexis Nelson losing to TCU's Marie Norris, 6-3, 4-6, 0-6, and freshman Jasie Dunk losing to TCU's Donika Bashota, 6-2, 6-1.

The Bears went 3-0 in doubles on Sunday, as Bright and Rosenqvist defeated TCU's Kennedy and Elizabeth Tedford, 7-6, Smith and junior Olivia Hauger topped Zenovska and Norris, 6-3, and Dunk and Nelson stopped TCU's Cveticanin and Pereira, 6-2.

"Today we did a really good job in every doubles match we played, which was good to see so early in the year," Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. "We really weren't familiar with many of the opponents. But we did a really good job of being aggressive and were quite composed for so early in the year.

"We actually had quite a longer day than expected, with several rain delays with one about one and a half hours long. The team handled that well, which is good because that's something you have to deal with throughout the season at various tournaments. We were able to get a good number of matches in, and we finished the day with a great three-set win by Maria in singles. I was happy to see Julia get her first two wins as a Bear as well."

The Hawaii tournament ends on Monday.
