HONOLULU – California won five times on the first day of the
University of Hawaii's Weinman Foundation Invitational in Honolulu on Saturday. Freshman
Anna Bright – ranked 27th in singles – led the way with a 7-6, 2-6, 10-6 victory over Texas A&M's Domenica Gonzalez at the UH Tennis Complex.
"It's really exciting to get back out on the courts," Cal head coach
Amanda Augustus said. "This tournament's great. It's definitely a good level of competition for us to kick off the season with. It was a good first day.
Â
"The women's swimming team is here right now also, training, and it's exciting to have another Cal team around."
Â
Cal junior
Maria Smith captured two victories, beating Texas A&M's Eva Paalma, 6-1, 2-6, 10-3, and partnering with junior
Olivia Hauger to knock off A&M's Riley McQuaid and Dorthea Faa-Hvding, 6-2. Freshman
Jasie Dunk also won twice, beating Faa Hvding, 2-6, 6-3, 10-2, and teaming with sophomore
Alexis Nelson to top the Aggies' Macarena Olivares and Iulia Ivascu, 6-1.
Â
"Both Maria and Jasie did well," Augustus said. "They both had wins in singles and doubles today. They actually got to play next to each other well and kept each other motivated. That was good to see so early in the season.
Â
Also on Saturday, Swedish freshman Julia Rosenqvist made her Cal debut in singles and in doubles, paired with Bright.
Â
The Weinman Foundation Invitational continues on Sunday.
