BERKELEY – Jack Molloy improved to 2-0 at the Hellman Tennis Complex when the freshman won in singles to clinch No. 19 California's 4-3 victory over Oregon in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend consolation match on Monday.

The Golden Bears, rebounding from a 4-3 loss to No. 22 Tulane in Sunday's tournament opener, improved their record to 3-1. Oregon is now 3-2.

Along with Molloy and freshman Paul Barretto, seniors J.T. Nishimura and Billy Griffith – who posted a big 2-6, 6-1, 6-0 upset win over sixth-ranked Thomas Laurent – won in singles to power the Golden Bears past Oregon.

Cal trailed the Ducks 1-0 after doubles. Oregon clinched the point when Ty Gentry and Simon Stevens defeated Dominic Barretto and Paul Barretto, 6-4, on court three.

Paul Barretto topped Riki Oshima, 6-1, 6-1, to open singles, and later Nishimura added a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 win over Simon Stevens. A close Jacob Brumm loss on court five tied the match at 3-3, before Molloy – who also won in singles against Tulane  – handed the Bears the win.

"Our seniors were outstanding today and truly made a difference," said Peter Wright, Cal's Director of Men's Tennis. "Oregon has a very strong team, and today it came down to the wire. Our freshmen love the spotlight and the pressure, and they have been elevating their performances at critical times in our matches. We still have plenty of work to do this season, and our guys have been enthusiastic learners, which makes the process much more enjoyable."

Later on Monday at Hellman, No. 12 Stanford (3-0) won the ITA Kick-Off Weekend final, 4-1, over Tulane (2-1) to qualify for the ITA National Team Indoor Championship.

Cal next hits the road to play at No. 16 Illinois on Feb. 9 and at No. 17 Michigan on Feb. 11.
