BERKELEY – Eleventh-ranked California suffered its first loss of the season when the Golden Bears fell to 12th-ranked Texas, 4-3, in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend final on Saturday at the Hellman Tennis Complex. With the victory, the Longhorns (4-0) will advance to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship slated for Feb. 9-12 in Madison, Wisconsin.

Cal (1-1) got off to a better start than it did against UNLV on Friday, when the Bears lost the doubles point. On Saturday, the freshman pair of Anna Bright and Julia Rosenqvist beat the Longhorns' Anna Turati and Petra Granic, 6-3, on court one to clinch the point.

In singles, the Bears got wins from juniors Maria Smith, who beat Bojana Markovic, 6-0, 6-2, on court four, and the 40th-ranked Olivia Hauger, who upset the 32nd-ranked Granic, 6-3, 6-4, on court three. But Texas secured the victory and its trip to Wisconsin when the 87th-ranked Turati knocked off Rosenqvist, 7-5, 6-4, on court two.

"It was a good match, a high-quality match, and I think that was what we expected," Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. "I was really pleased in our doubles compared to yesterday. We really stepped it up a level. In singles we competed very hard. While it's unfortunate we won't get to play in Madison, there's a lot of good we can take away from that match. We're building, and it's January. We're hoping to be the best team in May. I'm really pleased with a lot that I saw today, and I'm proud of the effort of our team. Credit to Texas. That's a good team. They stepped up on a couple of courts and closed out matches."

In the ITA Kick-Off Weekend consolation match at Hellman, UNLV (3-1) defeated Mississippi State (2-2), 4-3.

Cal next hosts two nonconference matches against San Diego State on Feb. 1 and then against Santa Clara on Feb. 3 at Hellman.
