Bright Wins Titles As Winter Invite Ends

BERKELEY – California's Anna Bright capped off the 2018 Cal Winter Invitational with a singles title and – along with partner Julia Rosenqvist – a doubles crown, as the annual tournament came to an end on Sunday.

Freshmen Bright and Rosenqvist defeated Fresno State's Georgia Lawson and Emma Wilson, 6-3, in the early afternoon at the Hellman Tennis Complex to finish 3-0 in court-one doubles. Later, the 27th-ranked Bright bested Mariia Kozyreva of Saint Mary's, 6-4, 6-1, to also end up 3-0 in court-one singles. Rosenqvist also prevailed in singles against the Gaels, beating Kareena Manji, 6-2, 6-2.

This marks the second straight week in which Bright walked away with tournament kudos, as she was named the co-champion of top-flight singles at the Weinman Foundation Invitational on Jan. 8 in Hawaii.

The Bears won a total of eight matches in their invitational on Sunday, and that included the first singles victory of the season for senior Audrey Mayer. Playing at the Channing Tennis Courts in the morning, Mayer beat Cal Poly's Abigail Bacharach, 6-0, 6-2. Mayer and Bacharach also teamed up in doubles at Hellman but lost to Fresno State's Juliane Triebe and Ndindi Ndunda, 7-5.

Of the doubles matches featuring complete Cal pairs, the Bears won all three, including juniors Maria Smith and Olivia Hauger beating Fresno State's Abbey Watanabe and Karerina Stloukalova, 6-2, and sophomore Alexis Nelson and freshman Jasie Dunk knocking off the Bulldogs' Olivia Noble and Alessia Dario, 6-4.

In the last match of the tournament, Nelson beat the Gaels' Aubane Ville, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0(3), at Hellman.

"I was glad to see that on the final day we were a lot more solid in doubles," Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. "We talked about a few things and worked on a few things, so I was pretty pleased to see how we competed in doubles today. In singles, we had a lot of great highlights. Audrey Mayer had a great win today and finishing off with Alexis Nelson winning in a third-set breaker. Everyone comes away with a lot of good stuff from this weekend as well as a few things we'll spend the next week and a half tuning up before we get to the play on the Hellman courts again for the Kick-Off Weekend."

Besides freshman Vivian Glozman, who didn't play in the Cal Winter Invitational, the young Bears – including freshman Jasie Dunk – got plenty of court time over the three-day event.

"I'm a big believer in match play," Augustus said. "I think it's critical. You can practice all you want, but at the end of the day it's the matches that matter. We really, really try to make sure that everybody gets to compete as much as they can possibly compete. In the team matches you never know who it'll come down to, who'll need to step up or who's going to play doubles with whom, so it was great that the young players got to play. Also, we had good weather conditions considering the time of year – I think it's supposed to rain tomorrow – so the fact we were able to get three full days of tennis in is just going to serve this team really well."

The 11th-ranked Bears return to the courts when they host the ITA Kick-Off Weekend from Jan. 26-27 at Hellman.
