BERKELEY – California had tougher time at the Cal Winter Invitational on Saturday than on Friday, but the Golden Bears still captured seven of 11 matches on the second day of their annual tournament.

Cal lost six of nine first sets in singles on Saturday but won five of nine in singles. Three Bears rallied to win in three sets, with Cal freshman Julia Rosenqvist beating Fresno State's Emma Wilson, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, and junior Maria Smith defeating the Bulldogs' Juliane Triebe, 4-6, 6-1, 6-0, in the morning matches at the Hellman Tennis Complex. Alexis Nelson, who lost a morning match to FSU's Alessia Dario, 6-2, 6-2, at Hellman, rebounded in the afternoon at the Channing Tennis Courts in the Bears' last match of the day, as the Cal sophomore topped the Bulldogs' Olivia Noble, 4-6, 7-6(5), 7-5.

The Bears also won two out of three in doubles. At Hellman, the pair of Rosenqvist and freshman Anna Bright topped Cal Poly's Molly Reed and Seriana Saltzen, 6-2, while juniors Smith and Olivia Hauger bested the Mustangs' Susanne Boyden and MacKenzie Worsnop, 6-0.

"We just got off to a little bit of a slow start today," Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. "For the most part we adjusted. We didn't hit the ball as cleanly today as I would've liked, but the good part is a couple of girls got an additional match today, so I think they were able to work that out. Overall, it was another great day. We have one more day tomorrow, but we've gotten to see what we needed to see, and it's given us a to-do list in preparation for the ITA Kick-Off Weekend."

The Cal Winter Invitational ends on Sunday, with the Bears next hosting the ITA Kick-Off Weekend from Jan. 26-27 at Hellman.
