BERKELEY – The Golden Bears captured eight of nine matches on the first day of the annual Cal Winter Invitational on Friday at the Hellman Tennis Complex. The Bears won five singles matches against Cal Poly and won three times in doubles against Saint Mary's under partly cloudy skies.

The Cal Winter Invitational – which featuring singles and doubles tournaments – also includes Fresno State, with matches taking place at Hellman and at the Channing Tennis Courts.

Making her Berkeley debut, Cal freshman Julia Rosenqvist posted Friday's first victory as she beat the Mustang's MacKenzie Worsnop 6-0, 6-2. Fellow freshman Anna Bright, ranked 27th in singles, followed with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Cal Poly's Susanne Boyden.

After the day's first round of singles ended, the Bears played doubles against the Gaels at Hellman. Bright and Rosenqvist teamed up to beat Clementine Clement and Mariia Kozyreva of Saint Mary's, 6-2. Cal sophomore Alexis Nelson and freshman Jasie Dunk topped Vanessa Nommenson and Aubane Ville, 6-4, and then Cal juniors Olivia Hauger and Maria Smith broke Hind Abdelouahid and Emma Critser to win 6-3, in Cal's last match of the day.

"It was good that we got some matches in last weekend," Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said of the Bears playing in the Weinman Foundation Invitational in Hawaii. "We're looking a little sharper than if this had been our first day of spring matches, but I still think we have some adjustments to make. Our singles were a lot stronger than our doubles, so we'll talk about a few things and make those adjustments for tomorrow. Overall, it's a beautiful day, and it was a good first day back playing in Berkeley. I'm excited for our freshmen to get their first spring matches at Hellman."
