BERKELEY - California posted impressive doubles results Friday morning and
Olivia Hauger capped off the first day of the annual Cal Fall Invitational with a victory under the lights as the Golden Bears began the new season at home at the Hellman Tennis Complex and Channing Tennis Courts.
The 75th-ranked Hauger, the top seed in the Blue (top) singles flight, won twice – including a 7-5, 6-2 round of 16 victory6 over Lani-Rae Green of UC Davis – at Hellman to reach Saturday's quarterfinals. The Cal junior also defeated Pacific's Karina Vyrlan, 6-2, 6-2, in the opening round of 32.
Earlier, the 11th-ranked and top-seeded pair of Hauger and senior
Karla Popovic bested San Francisco's Emily Maxfield and Shanna Dos Santos, 8-1, at Hellman to advance to Saturday's quarterfinals in the Blue doubles flight.
Anna Bright, one of Cal's talented newcomers, likewise won twice – beating Cal Poly's Susanne Boyden, 6-0, 6-2, in her collegiate debut and then defeating Santa Clara's Maddie Pothoff, 6-4, 6-3, in the round of 16 – in Blue singles to join Hauger in Saturday's quarterfinals.
Earlier, Bright paired with freshman Vivian Glozman to also win 8-1 in Blue doubles, as the new Bears topped BYU's Madeline Almeida and Samantha Smith for their first college victory.
But Glozman – also playing in Blue singles – fell in the round of 32 to Sacramento State's Maria Gonzalez, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Jasie Dunk was another first-year Bear who won in her debut at Hellman, pairing with junior
Maria Smith to beat Santa Clara's Delaney Nothaft and Elvena Gevargiz, 8-2, in the Gold doubles round of 16. Dunk bested Gevargiz again later for her first singles win, 7-6, 6-4, in the Gold round of 32.
Cal won three out of four in the first round of top-flight singles, as Smith upset Santa Clara's seventh-seeded Madison Clarke, 6-1, 7-6. In the round of 16, Smith had match point in the second set against Fresno State's Emma Wilson, but the Bulldog rallied to win the second set and eventually the match in a 6-7, 7-6, 6-1 result.

"It was a great day," Cal head coach
Amanda Augustus said. "We got a lot of doubles and singles in, and it was just great to start the season and kick it off here at Hellman and at Channing. We always get a real great turnout of teams at this event, and we're real appreciative that a lot of them start their year here, too.
"I thought our team started out well here today. We had such a hot week, and it's cooled off here at the end of the week. And some of our players had to wait around a bit for their matches. Getting used to different conditions like that will help us during the season when we play in other tournaments and matches. I thought they handled it well today. For the first day of the season, it was well done."
Of her freshmen, Augustus said, "They all were excited to play and compete in their first day as a Cal Bears. I thought they all definitely learned a lot today. They competed pretty well. Going into tomorrow, they'll be more relaxed. It takes time to get used to all of this – new opponents, new schools. Overall they did a great job, and I'm excited to see them build off of that for tomorrow."
Saturday's action at the Cal Fall Invitational begins with doubles, with the earliest matches starting at 8 a.m. at Channing. Saturday's Hellman doubles matches begin at 9 a.m.
