DAVIS, Calif. - Bjorn Hoffmann led a young group of Golden Bears on the first day of the Aggie Invitational at UC Davis, as the California sophomore advanced to the main draw doubles semifinals and to the main draw singles round of 16 on Friday.

The top-seeded Hoffmann beat David Goulak of the host Aggies, 6-4, 6-4, in the Singles A opening round of 32. He paired with fellow sophomore Connor Heap to win twice in doubles to reach Saturday's semis.

Heap and Hoffmann – the second seed in the Doubles A bracket – defeated Gonzaga's Kyle Everly and Vincent Rettke, 8-6, in the opening round of 16 and then knocked off Portland's Pierre Garcia and Tom Hahn, 8-5, in the quarterfinals.
 
The top seed in the A bracket was the brother duo of Cal sophomore Nic and freshman Paul Barretto. Santa Clara's Vasileios Iliopoulos and Jesus Tapiador Barajas upset the brothers, 8-5, in the round of 16.
 
In the Doubles B draw, Cal sophomore Gunther Matta and freshman Jackson Suh fell in the round of 16 to Jacob Lagman and Brian Lee of Saint Mary's, 8-6.
 
Back in the Singles A draw, the second-seeded Paul Barretto joined Hoffmann in the round of 16 after defeating Sacramento State's Dom Miller, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, while Heap fell to Everett Maltby of host UC Davis, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, in the round of 32.
 
All four Bears in the Singles B bracket won their round of 32 matches, as top-seeded Cal freshman Can Kaya beat the Aggies' Arjith Jayaraman, 7-6(3), 6-3, second-seeded Nic Barretto upended the Hornets' Bernardo Moraes, 6-1, 6-1, Suh topped Gonzaga's Everly, 6-3, 6-3, and Matta defeated another Aggie in Chethan Swanson, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.
 
In Singles C action, Cal freshman Thomas Wright lost to Santa Clara's Max Heerinckx, 6-1, 6-1.

The Aggie Invite ends on Sunday.
