SAN FRANCISCO – Jacob Brumm won the first title of his young college career on Sunday, when the California freshman defeated Matteo Zincirli of host San Francisco, 6-2, 6-3, in the consolation singles final of the Battle in the Bay Classic at the California Tennis Club.

Earlier Sunday, Brumm beat another Don, Ryan Marker, 6-4, 6-4, in the semifinals.

After falling in straight sets in his main draw opener, Brumm did not lose a set in his consolation bracket run, which included four matches and a bye.

"I was very pleased with Jacob's performance this weekend," Cal associate head coach Tyler Browne said. "He's consistently improved after every match. We've been working on some small adjustments with his serve and his position on the court, which have really helped his point play."

Four Bears competed at the three-day Battle in the Bay, including Brumm, senior J.T. Nishimura, sophomore Nic Barretto and freshman Paul Barretto.

"Overall, the boys played well," Browne said. "We're growing as a team, and it's great to have these opportunities to compete against the best in the country."

The Bears next play in the Aggie Invitational at UC Davis starting Friday. A few Bears could compete in the Saint Francis Health System All-American Championships starting Saturday in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The ITA will reveal the All-American draws later this week.
