Brumm Reaches Consolation Semis In S.F.

SAN FRANCISCO – Jacob Brumm became the last Golden Bear standing at the Battle in the Bay Classic on Saturday, after the California freshman won twice and got a bye on the way to the consolation singles semifinals at the California Tennis Club.
 
In the first round of the consolation bracket, Brumm topped Boise State's Jack Heslin, 6-1, 6-2, and then had a second-round bye. In the quarterfinals, the young Bear bested Pepperdine's Dane Esses, 6-2, 6-1. Brumm will play San Francisco's Ryan Marker in the semis on Sunday at 10:30 a.m.
 
Playing in the main draw round of 16, Cal senior J.T. Nishimura lost to Georgia's third-seeded and 30th-ranked Emil Reinberg, 7-5, 7-4.
 
Sophomore Nic Barretto and younger brother Paul Barretto joined Brumm in the consolation bracket. Nic lost to Marker, 6-4, 6-3, in the first round. Paul opened with a first-round win over Boise State's Matteo Tinelli, 6-0, 4-0 ret (inj.) and then had a bye in the second round. But the first-year Bear lost to USF's Matteo Zincirli in a tight quarterfinal, 6-7(2), 6-2, 1-0(8).
 
The Battle in the Bay Classic concludes on Sunday.
